Bima Sugam September 2026 Update: When Will the Insurance Platform Go Live?

Bima Sugam

Bima Sugam, IRDAI’s digital insurance marketplace, is due to have motor, health and term insurance live by the end of September 2026. Motor renewals and health insurance began rolling out in August, but insurer integrations are still running behind, and reports through mid-August still described motor insurers as being in trial mode. The September-end deadline is the platform’s latest date after several earlier ones slipped.

Bima Sugam has been “almost here” since 2023, and September 2026 is the latest date attached to it. IRDAI Chairman Ajay Seth confirmed on 30 June 2026 that the platform’s three priority products, motor, health and term insurance, should be available by September-end, while also acknowledging the project remains behind schedule.

What Has Actually Gone Live

The Bima Sugam website has functioned as an information hub since September 2025. The platform itself is being rolled out product by product rather than all at once: new-vehicle motor insurance came first, followed by motor renewals and health insurance from August 2026, with term life meant to complete the set in September.

Reports through mid-August still described motor insurers as being in trial and integration mode rather than running live transactions at scale, so what a policyholder can do on the platform on any given day still depends on whether their specific insurer has finished connecting.

Why the Wait, Again?

The core reason behind the delay again hasn’t changed:

  • Bringing insurers across life, health and general insurance onto a common platform
  • Integrating with intermediaries and government databases (Aadhaar, PAN, DigiLocker) onto one shared system
  • Building Bima Pehchaan and the e-Bima account as part of a unified digital insurance infrastructure

Motor was sequenced first because it is more standardised out of the three; health and life are proving harder to fit into one comparable format, which is part of why they trail motor into the platform.

IRDAI Regulations, 2024 set the legal framework back in March 2024, and the Bima Sugam India Federation, the not-for-profit body running the platform, has needed additional capital from insurer-shareholders since to keep the build going.

What This Means If You Have a Renewal Due

If a motor or health policy is due for renewal in September, don’t wait for Bima Sugam to renew it. Insurer websites, agents and aggregators continue to provide the existing renewal routes, while Bima Sugam is being rolled out in phases. Policyholders can continue using those channels now and use Bima Sugam for future transactions as its capabilities expand.
