₹72 Lakh Hospital Bill on a ₹10 Lakh Health Policy: Is a Standard Sum Insured Still Enough?

A road accident left a 26-year-old with a hospital bill of nearly ₹72 lakh against a ₹10 lakh health policy, reported on 3 September 2026. The figure reopens a hard question: whether a standard ₹5 lakh or ₹10 lakh cover still protects an Indian family.

The Bill that Reopened the Question

Trade outlet SMEStreet reported that the policyholder was severely injured four months after buying a ₹10 lakh policy with a restoration benefit. After emergency evacuation and a long stretch of treatment, the bill reached close to ₹72 lakh, and nearly all of it was cleared through cashless approvals. The insurer has not been named.

The settlement is not the striking part. The bill is. A single accident produced costs more than seven times the sum insured that most Indian buyers still treat as generous protection.

Can a ₹5 lakh or ₹10 lakh Cover Still Hold?

Reuters reported on 12 August 2026 that medical inflation in India is running at roughly 12 to 14 per cent a year, among the highest in Asia. The same report cited a parliamentary committee finding that an average private hospital stay costs about 530 dollars, against 70 dollars at a public facility.

Compounding does the rest. At 13 per cent a year, a treatment that costs ₹10 lakh today will cost close to ₹34 lakh in ten years. A cover bought in 2016 and never revised has already lost most of its purchasing power, even though the policy schedule still says ₹5 lakh.

The amount finally paid is a separate problem. Speaking at BimaLokpal Day in November 2025, IRDAI chairman Ajay Seth said: “In health insurance, we continue to see gaps- while the number of claims settled is high, the amount settled, especially in full, is sometimes lower than expected. This is an area we are monitoring closely.” Room rent caps, sub-limits and co-payment clauses routinely trim a claim well before it reaches the sum insured.

What Actually Raises Usable Cover?

Three layers do the work. A restoration benefit refills the sum insured once it is exhausted, usually for a fresh and unrelated hospitalisation in the same year. A super top-up sits above a fixed deductible and pays everything past it, which is the cheapest route to a total cover of ₹50 lakh or more. Personal accident cover pays a lump sum for death or disability rather than hospital bills, so it replaces lost income.

Timing matters less than most buyers assume. The customer information sheet format in the annexure to the IRDAI Master Circular on Health Insurance Business states that the initial waiting period applies to illnesses and not to accidents, and that specific waiting periods also exclude accident claims. A new policy covers an accident from day one.

Working out the right numbers is where most households stall. MyRupia reviews an existing policy against current treatment costs, checks the sub-limits and room rent clauses that quietly shrink a payout, and shows whether a higher base cover or a super top-up gives better value for the premium.

It charges for consultations and earns nothing from insurers, so the reading does not depend on who sells the policy. Anyone facing a delayed or partially settled hospital claim can use its claims guidance to escalate the file.
