ICICI Prudential Life Insurance is set to adopt a new corporate identity as ICICI Life Insurance Limited, following a proposed change linked to Prudential Corporation Holdings’ restructuring of its India insurance business. The move has raised questions among existing policyholders about their policies and benefits.
The company’s board approved the proposed name change in July 2026, as Prudential Corporation Holdings sought reclassification from promoter to investor. The move follows Prudential plc’s decision to acquire a controlling 75% stake in Bharti Life Insurance, changing its position in India.
Why is ICICI Prudential dropping ‘Prudential’?
ICICI Prudential Life began operations in 2001 as a joint venture between ICICI Bank and Prudential Corporation Holdings. The company currently describes both entities as its promoters, while ICICI Bank remains its largest shareholder.
Prudential’s proposed acquisition of a 75% stake in Bharti Life Insurance represents a shift in its India strategy. Instead of retaining its existing promoter position in ICICI Prudential Life, Prudential Corporation Holdings is seeking investor status, prompting the proposed rebranding.
The name change, therefore, is primarily connected with the company’s corporate structure and brand identity. It does not represent a fresh insurance business or indicate that ICICI Bank is exiting the life insurance company. The proposed entity will continue its existing insurance operations.
What happens to existing policies?
For existing customers, the proposed corporate name change should not alter the underlying insurance contract. A policyholder’s coverage, premium obligations and benefits continue to be governed by the individual policy document and applicable insurance regulations.
This means customers do not need to surrender their existing policies or purchase new plans simply because the insurer adopts the ICICI Life name. Premiums should continue to be paid according to the existing schedule, unless the insurer separately communicates any policy-specific change.
Similarly, benefits attached to participating policies, including bonuses where applicable, remain subject to the terms of the individual policy and the company’s applicable declarations. A corporate rebranding does not automatically remove or reset such contractual benefits.
Claims will also continue to be handled by the insurer through its existing policy servicing and claims processes. The company continues to operate its insurance business, while the proposed corporate changes proceed through the required regulatory and corporate approval processes.
Do policyholders need to update anything?
There is generally no need for customers to take immediate action solely because of the proposed name change. Policyholders should continue retaining their existing policy documents and paying premiums on time until further communication is issued by the insurer.
Once the new name becomes effective, customers may see ICICI Life Insurance Limited appearing on future statements, correspondence, receipts and other servicing documents. The insurer may provide additional instructions if any administrative changes are required.
Policyholders should nevertheless ensure that their address, PAN, bank details, nominee information and other KYC records remain updated. These details are important for policy servicing, maturity payments and claims, irrespective of the company’s corporate name.
