Dinesh Pant joins IRDAI as Member (Actuary), while Girija Subramanian takes charge as Whole-Time Member (Distribution), strengthening the regulator’s leadership across key insurance functions.
The Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) has appointed Dinesh Pant as Member (Actuary) and Girija Subramanian as Whole-Time Member (Distribution), bringing senior public-sector insurance experience to two important regulatory functions.
The appointments come as the insurance sector undergoes changes across product design, distribution, customer protection and regulatory oversight. Both officials will oversee areas that directly affect how insurers assess risk and expand access to insurance products.
Dinesh Pant joins IRDAI as Member (Actuary)
Pant joins the insurance regulator after serving as managing director of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC). The government approved his appointment as Whole-Time Member (Actuary) in June 2026 for a five-year term, subject to the applicable age and service conditions.
Pant began his career with LIC in 1989 and held several roles across actuarial, investment, marketing and international operations. He became LIC’s managing director in June 2025. LIC records also show his experience as the corporation’s appointed actuary and executive director for actuarial functions.
Pant took voluntary retirement from LIC with effect from the close of September 24, 2026, clearing the way for his move to IRDAI.
His actuarial experience comes at a time when life insurance regulation continues to focus on product pricing, risk assessment, solvency and sustainable business growth.
Girija Subramanian takes charge of distribution
Subramanian joins IRDAI after serving as chairman and managing director of New India Assurance Company. The government approved her appointment as Whole-Time Member (Distribution) for five years, subject to the applicable conditions.
Her portfolio covers insurance distribution, an area that remains central to increasing insurance penetration and improving access to products across India.
The appointment also comes as IRDAI works on changes to insurance distribution, including proposed reforms covering commissions, expenses, market conduct and customer-facing practices. The regulator recently proposed a new framework to recalibrate the economics of insurance distribution.
Focus on insurance regulation and distribution
With Pant handling actuarial responsibilities and Subramanian overseeing distribution, the two appointments add industry experience to IRDAI’s leadership structure.
The regulator continues to work on broader reforms aimed at improving transparency, strengthening customer protection and expanding insurance access.
The appointments therefore add two senior insurance professionals to functions that remain closely linked to the sector’s future development: risk assessment and insurance distribution.
