About Care Health Insurance
If you have a Religare Health Insurance policy, don’t worry, it’s the same company under a new name. Religare Health Insurance was renamed Care Health Insurance. Your policy is still valid, and Care Health will service it on the same terms as before. Just use the policy number printed on your original Religare document.
This name change is sticking around longer than most, because Religare Health policies were sold over many years, and health policies renew every year instead of just expiring. So it’s completely normal to have an old document with the Religare name on it while your current policy is still active.
Care Health was licensed in 2012 and writes retail health, group health, personal accident and travel cover, the full extent of a standalone health licence. Care Health is majority-owned by Religare Enterprises Limited, which holds a 63.2% stake. The remaining promoter-group holdings included Trishikhar Ventures LLP and Union Bank of India.
A tougher mix of customers to insure. Compared to most Indian health insurers, Care Health has sold more policies to senior citizens and to people who already have health conditions.
This is a real difference, and it’s worth pointing out. When a company insures more older people and people with existing health conditions, its incurred claim ratio (the share of premium it pays out in claims) will naturally be higher than a company that mostly insures young, healthy people. That’s simply a result of who it covers, not a sign of good or bad management.
IRDAI Registration and Licence
Care Health holds IRDAI registration number 148 as a standalone health insurer, permitting it to write health insurance, personal accident and travel cover. It cannot write motor, home, fire or life insurance.
The registration number did not change with the rename, since a registration follows the legal entity rather than the trading name.
Claim Record
| Measure | Care Health | What it means |
| Incurred claim ratio | 64.53% (FY 2024-25) | Claims paid as a percentage of premium earned |
| Claim repudiation rate | 3.50% (Q1 FY 2026-27, Apr-Jun 2026) | Percentage of claims declined outright |
| Average settlement turnaround | -1 hour for cashless pre-authorisation -3 hours for cashless discharge -15 days for reimbursement claims | How fast the insurer is required to act after a claim is filed |
| Claims settled, count | 4,44,575 health claims paid (Q1 FY 2026-27, Apr-Jun 2026) | Volume of claims settled in the period |
Read this ratio against the book. A senior-citizen-weighted portfolio produces higher claim frequency and higher claim values than a young retail book, so a higher incurred claim ratio here reflects the risk profile the company has chosen to underwrite. Comparing it flat against an insurer writing mainly young lives answers the wrong question.
Financial Strength
Care Health reported a solvency ratio of 1.68 in March 2025 (FY2024-25), against the IRDAI minimum of 1.50.

On senior citizen products specifically: Entry age limits, co-payment percentages, room rent caps and waiting periods for pre-existing conditions vary between Care Health’s own senior products, and those four terms decide more about a claim than the sum insured does.
A plan marketed for older buyers is not automatically generous on any of them. Read the policy wording for the specific plan and check the entry age limit before assuming eligibility.
How Care Health Compares
| Parameter | Care Health | Niva Bupa | Star Health |
| Founded | 2012 | 2008 | 2006 |
| Former name | Religare Health | Max Bupa | None |
| Incurred claim ratio (FY2024-25) | 64.53% | 61.22% | 70.30% |
| Solvency ratio (as of Mar 2025) | 1.68 | 3.03 | 2.21 |
| Cashless network | 22,100+ providers | 10,500+ hospitals | 16,000+ hospitals |
| Book weighting | Senior citizen and PED-weighted | Retail and group | Retail, largest by premium |
Verdict:
all three hold the same 1.50 solvency floor, and none is safer than the others. Care Health is worth comparing directly if you are buying for an older parent or hold a pre-existing condition, because it has built more product around those cases than most.
For a young, healthy buyer, the comparison should turn on network coverage and policy terms rather than on that specialisation.
Grievance and Complaints Record
| Measure | Care Health (Q1 FY 2026-27) | Sector context (FY 2024-25) |
| Total complaints received | 2,391 | 46,151 grievances against standalone health insurers |
| Complaints per 10,000 policies | 0.28 | 0.529 per 10,000 |
| Complaints resolved | 2,093 of 2,391; 298 pending at quarter-end | General & Health insurers: 1,27,755 attended; 9,606 pending at year-end |
| Most common complaint category | Claim-related (65.5%) | Claims: 69% of General & Health grievances |
One thing worth keeping in mind. An insurer that covers more senior citizens and people with existing health conditions will naturally deal with more claims involving waiting periods, exclusions, and partial payouts.
These are exactly the kinds of situations that lead to complaints. So before you judge how good a company’s service is, look at the complaint breakdown by category, not just the total number.

| Cashless hospital list | https://www.careinsurance.com/health-plan-network-hospitals.html |
- For a cashless claim, planned admission: confirm the hospital is on the current cashless list, notify Care Health within the period your policy specifies, and have the hospital submit pre-authorisation. Settle what the policy does not cover at discharge, including any co-payment, which is more common on senior citizen plans.
- For an emergency admission: treatment first, then hospital notification, generally within 24 hours. Check your policy.
- For a reimbursement claim: pay the hospital, then submit the claim form with all original bills, prescriptions, the discharge summary and diagnostic reports.
- To escalate: grievance with Care Health first, then its grievance redressal officer, then IRDAI through Bima Bharosa, then the Insurance Ombudsman for claims up to ₹50 lakh.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Religare Health Insurance now Care Health?
Religare Health Insurance was renamed Care Health Insurance. It is the same company under the same IRDAI registration, and policies issued as Religare Health remain fully valid and are serviced by Care Health on their original terms. Use the policy number printed on your original Religare document.
What is Care Health Insurance's claim settlement ratio?
Care Health is a health insurer and is measured on the incurred claim ratio rather than the claim settlement ratio, which applies to life insurers. Care Health reported an incurred claim ratio of 64.53 per cent in FY2024-25. Read it against the company’s book, which carries more senior citizen and pre-existing condition business than most.
Is Care Health good for senior citizens?
Care Health has built more products around senior citizens and pre-existing condition cover than most Indian health insurers. Whether a specific plan suits your parent depends on its entry age limit, co-payment percentage, room rent cap and the waiting period for their existing conditions. Check all four in the policy wording before buying.
Are my old Religare Health policies still valid?
Policies issued by Religare Health Insurance remain fully valid and are serviced by Care Health Insurance on their original terms. A rename does not change policy conditions, waiting periods, premiums or benefits. Health policies renew annually, so you may hold an old-name document and a current policy at the same time.
How do I contact Care Health Insurance for a claim?
Contact Care Health through its customer care number, website or app, using the policy number on your document, including one issued as Religare Health. For a planned admission, notify the insurer before admission; for an emergency, the hospital should notify it after admission, generally within 24 hours.
