ICICI Lombard General Insurance reported premium income of ₹2,190 crore in August 2026, up 0.36% from ₹2,182 crore in the same month last year. The insurer’s premium growth remained modest even as the broader non-life insurance industry recorded stronger growth during the month.
ICICI Lombard’s market share declined to 8.8% in August from 9.3% a year earlier. The company did not provide a segment-wise or product-wise breakdown for its August premium figure.
August Premium Growth Compared With Peers
The insurer’s August performance was lower than that of several other large general insurers. Bajaj General Insurance reported gross direct premium of ₹2,291 crore, an 11.0% year-on-year increase. HDFC ERGO General Insurance recorded ₹1,710 crore, up 58.4%, while Go Digit General Insurance reported ₹776 crore, an increase of 5.1%.
Across non-life insurers, gross direct premium underwritten rose 10.37% year on year in August. The figures indicate that ICICI Lombard’s 0.36% growth was below the overall industry expansion during the month.
Q1 FY27 Profit and Premium Performance
The August numbers come after a weaker first quarter for ICICI Lombard’s profitability. The insurer reported a 46% year-on-year decline in net profit to ₹403.17 crore for Q1 FY27, compared with ₹747.08 crore in the year-ago quarter. Its gross direct premium income, however, increased 7.5% to ₹8,318 crore during the quarter, against industry growth of 10.9%.
Higher claims and reserve provisions weighed on the June-quarter results. ICICI Lombard incurred two large fire losses amounting to ₹63 crore, while an additional ₹165 crore was provided for its motor third-party portfolio following the impact of a Supreme Court judgment. These factors contributed to the deterioration in its combined ratio to 107.2% from 102.9% a year earlier.
The company had reported growth across some key business segments in Q1 FY27. Motor gross direct premium income rose 14% year on year to ₹2,786 crore, while retail health premium increased 69.5%.
What the August Data Shows
The August premium data, however, does not indicate how individual segments performed during the month. The latest figures therefore provide a view of premium growth and market share rather than the insurer’s overall financial performance.
ICICI Lombard’s monthly premium performance will need to be viewed alongside its upcoming financial and regulatory disclosures to assess whether the slower growth in August is temporary or part of a broader trend. Its official public-disclosure page provides financial statements and premium-related disclosures for investors and other stakeholders.
What It Means for Policyholders
The August premium figures of ICICI Lombard do not by themselves indicate a change in policy benefits, coverage, claims handling or renewal terms for existing ICICI Lombard policyholders. Premium growth and market share are measures of the insurer’s business performance. They do not directly indicate how an individual policy will perform.
For prospective policyholders, the monthly figures provide some context on the insurer’s business growth but should not be treated as a standalone measure of an insurance policy’s suitability. Policyholders should instead review the specific policy’s coverage, exclusions, premium, deductibles, claim-related terms and renewal conditions. MyRupia can help policyholders compare these factors and understand insurance terms before making an informed decision.
