Gujarat Floods Push Insurance Claims Above ₹5,000 Crore

Gujarat Floods Push Insurance Claims

The Gujarat floods have triggered a sharp rise in insurance claims, with industry estimates now pointing to more than ₹5,000 crore in losses. The scale of the claims has prompted insurers to reassess pricing for fire and property insurance, particularly for large industrial assets.

The latest development marks a shift from earlier expectations. In August, industry officials expected Gujarat flood-related insurance claims of around ₹4,000-5,000 crore and did not foresee an immediate rise in property insurance rates.

Industrial Risks Face Pricing Review

Insurers now want more disciplined pricing for large industrial risks. They are considering stronger pricing based on the location of an asset and its exposure to natural catastrophes rather than relying heavily on premium discounts.

The floods affected several industrial areas across Gujarat. Welspun Living’s Vapi plant, for instance, suffered operational disruption from July 23. The company has filed a potential insurance claim of around ₹1,000 crore, according to people familiar with the matter. HDFC ERGO reportedly leads the insurance arrangement with about 30% of the insured limit.

Insurers are also discussing a minimum rate for the natural-catastrophe component of fire insurance policies. The move reflects concerns that aggressive price competition may have pushed premiums below levels that adequately reflect the underlying catastrophe exposure.

Reinsurance Could Influence Final Rates

Global reinsurers will play an important role in determining how much pricing changes. Reinsurers provide much of the capacity for large industrial risks, allowing primary insurers to spread losses from major events.

The current insurance claims estimate also highlights how the scale of flood losses has changed. Gujarat’s 2024 floods generated around ₹1,500-2,000 crore in insurance claims, compared with more than ₹5,000 crore expected from the latest event.

For businesses, higher catastrophe-based pricing could increase insurance costs, particularly for assets located in flood-prone areas. However, the extent and timing of any rate increase remain dependent on insurers’ assessments and the approach taken by global reinsurers.

The latest developments show how major climate-related events can influence commercial insurance pricing. As insurers complete claim assessments, the final loss figures will provide a clearer picture of the impact on the industrial insurance market.
